Miguel Ángel 718c67b387 fix: escape NUL bytes in HFMASK regex (Bun blank renders) + Windows junction for studio preview links (#2140)
* fix(core): escape NUL delimiters in HFMASK mask token and restore regex

Raw 0x00 bytes in the maskInertRegions token and restore regex made
timingCompiler.ts binary to git and shipped raw NULs into dist/cli.js.
Bun's transpiler (<= 1.3.11) corrupts raw NULs in regex literals into
literal backslash-uFFFD text, so restore never matched: every masked
<style>/<script> region was dropped, the player never initialized, and
bunx renders produced blank white frames showing HFMASK tokens.

Use \u0000 escapes instead, which survive any transpile layer, and add
a byte-level regression test (behavior is identical under Node, so only
a byte check catches this).

Fixes the first half of #2139.

* fix(cli): use NTFS junctions for studio project links on Windows

linkProjectIntoStudioData called symlinkSync(dir, path, "dir"), which
needs Developer Mode or elevation on Windows, so preview and dev in
local-studio mode died with EPERM for default-configured users.
Junctions need no privilege, work for directories, and keep the live
write-back the studio depends on (a copy fallback would decouple the
studio from the real project). Covers both preview and dev, which share
the helper.

Fixes the second half of #2139.

Miguel Ángel 6f0b57d608 fix(core): scope sub-composition html/body styles to the composition box (#2089)
Sub-composition <head> styles targeting html/body/:root (width/height/
overflow/background) were injected into the parent document unscoped by both
the Studio runtime mount (compositionLoader) and the render-time inliner
(inlineSubCompositions/htmlBundler). scopeCssToComposition deliberately passed
html/body/:root through unchanged, so a sub-composition smaller than the root
clobbered the host <body> dimensions and its overflow:hidden clipped the
composite to the last sub-comp's size. Only the top-left element painted;
everything else (and framework-owned video positioned outside that box) was
clipped away.

Add a scopeRootSelectors option to scopeCssToComposition that remaps
html/body/:root to the composition's own box, and enable it everywhere
sub-composition styles are scoped. The universal selector stays untouched.
Top-level composition scoping is unchanged (it legitimately owns the document).

Covered by new compositionScoping tests.

James RussoandClaude Opus 4.8 5ebc5bb10f fix(producer): scope per-instance variables for repeated sub-composition mounts (#2070)
#2066 fixed sub-composition data-variable-values on the render path for a single
mount, but the reusable-template pattern from #2064 (the same sub-comp mounted
multiple times with different values) still diverged from preview/snapshot:
every mount shared one __hfVariablesByComp key and one CSS scope selector, so
the last mount's values clobbered the earlier ones and all-but-one instance
rendered blank.

The producer now assigns per-instance runtime composition ids
(assignBundledRuntimeCompositionIds) and threads hostIdentityMap into the shared
inliner, mirroring the preview bundler. The shared inliner's default
buildScopeSelector already scopes by the runtime id, and timelines remap to it
via the scoping proxy, so each instance's variables, CSS, and timeline land
under its own id.

Pixel-verified end to end: two mounts of one sub-comp with different
data-variable-values now render their own content (green CARD_A / blue CARD_B),
matching snapshot; single-instance behavior is unchanged.

Miguel Ángel 41ad5b4690 fix(engine): inject sub-composition variables on the render path (#2066)
render left window.__hyperframes.getVariables() empty inside every
sub-composition mounted via data-composition-src, so each instance rendered
its declared JS defaults instead of the per-instance data-variable-values.
preview/snapshot injected them correctly, so the composition looked right in
every authoring/QA surface and then rendered wrong content silently (exit 0).
Any template-library workflow (reusable sub-comp scenes parametrized per
video) shipped placeholder/default text in the final MP4.

The plumbing already existed on main: htmlCompiler passes
readVariableDefaults/parseHostVariables and populates result.variablesByComp,
and the CSS-custom-property path (emitRootCompositionVariableStyles) reaches
the render. But the render compiler emitted only the CSS vars and never the
JS table window.__hfVariablesByComp that the scoped getVariables reads, while
the preview bundler (htmlBundler) did -- so getVariables() returned {} only
during render.

Fix, so the paths cannot drift again: buildVariablesByCompScript, colocated
with the reader in compositionScoping.ts and shared by both compile paths.
htmlBundler now calls it instead of an inline string; htmlCompiler injects it
before the inlined sub-comp scripts, using the already-populated
result.variablesByComp.

Verified end-to-end: a sub-comp painting its background from a color variable
now renders the injected value under render, matching snapshot; previously it
rendered the default. 3 new producer tests; 89 htmlCompiler + core-compiler
tests pass.

Closes #2064.

Vance IngallsandClaude Fable 5 e2c88ef689 fix(core,producer): composition CSS variables reach the render path at eval time
Live testing of the compile-time variable emission surfaced four gaps:

- The producer render path never emitted the compile-time stylesheet (only
  the preview bundler did), so eval-time reads — GSAP .from immediateRender,
  top-level getComputedStyle — saw undefined vars in rendered output. The
  producer's inlineSubCompositions now calls the shared
  emitRootCompositionVariableStyles and passes the variable hooks.
- --variables overrides weren't visible at eval time. They now thread from
  the orchestrator / distributed plan through compileStage into the emitted
  rules (window.__hfVariables still covers script reads).
- Per-declarer rules anchored on data-composition-id, which two inlined
  instances of one sub-composition share — instance A's rule restyled
  instance B, and a rule directly on the declarer defeated the host's
  inherited data-variable-values. Rules now anchor on per-instance
  data-hf-var-scope markers and layer nearest-host values over declared
  defaults, mirroring the runtime loader.
- Emission ignored authored CSS; a declared default now yields to a var
  already defined in an authored <style> block (define-if-absent, matching
  the runtime injection).

Also: the figma importer emits background-color (longhand) for solid fills.
GSAP backgroundColor tweens cannot read a var() through the background
shorthand — its pending-substitution longhands serialize empty, so .from
captured nothing and settled on transparent (pre-existing GSAP interaction,
reproduced with no composition variables involved).

Validated live: eval-time default + override, .from + override, two-instance
host branding, authored :root precedence, SDS brand-loop pixel parity.

Brand-loop live test (SDS duplicate, plans/figma/brand-loop-test-plan.md)
proved the recolor chain end-to-end and surfaced three gaps:

- runtime now defines every declared composition variable as a CSS
  custom property (document root at init + scoped sub-comp hosts in the
  loader), so imported var(--slug, literal) fills resolve live — without
  this the frozen literal always won and variable-driven rebranding
  could not propagate. Slug kept byte-compatible with the figma
  importer (parity test). render --variables overrides win.
- figma component --name: variant frames are often all named
  'Platform=Desktop' and slug-collided across imports.
- imported fragments carry data-hf-snippet and the project linter skips
  composition-root rules for them.
- /figma skill documents the field-tested non-Enterprise tokens path
  (MCP get_variable_defs joined with REST boundVariables ids).

Shared-helper extractions (injectScopedStyles, flattenedRoot module,
parseHostVariableValues, rasterizeFallback, shapeCss) satisfy the
dedup/complexity audit the runtime changes tripped.

Validated live: brand-loop renders purple from the attribute alone (no
manual :root); 118 figma + 662 runtime/compiler + 331 lint tests green.

Miguel Ángel 1a3330a972 fix(compiler): don't scan media tags inside comments/scripts; DOM-check auto-start (#1938) (#1940)
The timing compiler scanned raw HTML with tag regexes that weren't
comment-aware, so a comment or script merely mentioning `<video>`/`<audio>`
was rewritten as a real element — injecting id/data-start/data-hf-auto-start
into the comment text. That phantom attribute then tripped the probe stage's
substring check (`html.includes("data-hf-auto-start")`), launching an
unnecessary browser probe on every render with an unexplained empty reasons list.

- Mask comments, <script>, and <style> regions before the tag scan, then
  restore them verbatim (compileTimingAttrs, extractResolvedMedia).
- Replace the probe's substring match with a DOM query
  (video[data-hf-auto-start]) and add "auto-start video(s)" to the reasons list.

Miguel Ángel f7c9c35d8b fix(core): route window.__hyperframes to the scoped variant in sub-comps (#1931)
Sub-composition scripts run inside a wrapper that passes the SCOPED
__hyperframes (per-instance getVariables) as a bare script param, while
`window` is a Proxy. That proxy intercepted only __timelines, so
`window.__hyperframes` fell through to the HOST page's base
__hyperframes — whose getVariables reads the host's variables, not this
instance's. So the two documented spellings diverged: the bare
`__hyperframes.getVariables()` param returned the correct per-instance
values, but `window.__hyperframes.getVariables()` returned the wrong
(host / empty) ones, silently rendering every reused instance with the
first instance's content (or defaults).

docs/concepts/variables.mdx already promises both forms "work in both
top-level and sub-composition scripts ... each instance sees its own
resolved values" — the runtime just didn't honor it. Reported directly
(a user lost significant debugging time across three parametrized
sub-comps before discovering the bare param was the only form that
worked), and matches an earlier deferred finding that getVariables()
returns {} for reused sub-comp instances.

Fix: the scoped `window` proxy now returns the scoped __hyperframes for
`prop === "__hyperframes"`, so window.__hyperframes.getVariables() and
the bare param resolve identically to this composition's own variables.
The scoped variant is Object.assign({}, base, { getVariables }), so all
other __hyperframes members still pass through to the base unchanged.

Test: two new executed-wrapper cases (new Function(...)(fakeWindow)) —
window.__hyperframes.getVariables() now returns the per-comp variables
instead of the TOP-LEVEL-LEAK host value, and a non-getVariables member
(fitTextFontSize) still reaches the base. Full core suite (1092) passes.

Miguel Ángel 7e8a1466c3 fix: producer render diverges from preview for sub-composition root styling (#1886)
Fixes #1847

The producer's render path stripped a sub-composition's authored root element and inlined only its children, so any CSS anchored on that root (its id or classes) matched nothing in the compiled HTML even though it resolved fine in Studio preview.

Changes:
- Wire flattenInnerRoot into the producer's sub-composition inliner (packages/producer/src/services/htmlCompiler.ts) so its render-time DOM shape matches the preview bundler's.
- Rewrite a bare root [data-composition-id="X"] box selector to a :has()/:not() pair that lands on exactly one of the host or the flattened wrapper (packages/core/src/compiler/compositionScoping.ts), avoiding double-applying additive properties like padding.
- Restore the composition's own id onto the flattened wrapper when the host has no id of its own, an "anonymous" host (packages/core/src/compiler/inlineSubCompositions.ts).
- Fix the runtime's startResolver to find a composition's start time through the post-inlining data-composition-file marker, not just data-composition-src or data-composition-id (packages/core/src/runtime/startResolver.ts).

Also adds regression coverage for the literal issue #1847 repro (a class, not just an id, on the authored root, styled via a descendant selector), a test proving the runtime compositionLoader's anonymous-host path doesn't share this bug, and fixes stale test documentation and a misattributed code comment surfaced during review.

Verified: 29-fixture Docker regression sweep on linux/amd64 (matching CI) run 3x clean, 967/967 core unit tests, full CI green.

* fix(core,producer,cli): pre-flight validation for empty/malformed sub-compositions

The #1 render failure bucket in production telemetry (PostHog project 356858,
dashboard 1783183 "HyperFrames — Bottom-Line & Activation"; ~65-69K
occurrences / ~27-28K affected users over 30 days, ~80% via AI-agent
authoring flows) is a `data-composition-src` reference pointing at a scene
file that is empty, malformed, or missing.

Root cause, traced end-to-end:
- The literal error "Composition HTML is empty or could not be parsed: <path>"
  is real (not a PostHog paraphrase) — thrown by a since-reverted guard in
  packages/core/src/compiler/inlineSubCompositions.ts (#1364), then changed to
  a silent skip in #1678 to avoid aborting renders on partial content during
  authoring. #1629 added per-assembler guards for 3 skill workflows
  (product-launch-video, faceless-explainer, pr-to-video), but general-video
  and hand-authored flows — where the dominant filename `scene-title.html`
  (40K+/68K of the bucket) originates — have no assembler and thus no guard.
  #1678 assumed the assembler guards from #1629 covered this pre-render; they
  only covered 3 of the many authoring flows.
- On current `main`, an empty/malformed data-composition-src file no longer
  crashes or throws during render — it's silently dropped by the tolerant
  inliner. Reproduced locally: `hyperframes render` on a project with an
  empty scene-title.html "succeeds" after ~93s (two 45s
  pollSubCompositionTimelines timeouts) with the scene silently missing from
  the output video. `hyperframes validate` also reports "No console errors"
  for the same broken project.
- The raw `Cannot destructure property 'firstElementChild' of
  'documentElement' as it is null` crash reproduces directly against
  linkedom (the DOMParser polyfill packages/cli/src/utils/dom.ts installs in
  the real CLI runtime) for empty and non-HTML input — confirmed with a
  standalone repro script, not just inferred. jsdom/happy-dom (used in this
  repo's own test environment) are spec-compliant and never produce a null
  documentElement, which is why this needed a linkedom-specific test file.

Fix:
- New shared helper `checkSubCompositionUsability`
  (packages/core/src/compiler/subCompositionValidity.ts) is the single
  source of truth for "is this data-composition-src file usable" — mirrors
  the inliner's own parse/template/body logic so all callers agree.
- `inlineSubCompositions.ts` (preview/studio bundling) now uses the shared
  helper internally but keeps its #1678 tolerant skip-and-continue behavior
  unchanged — mid-authoring iteration on a partial project must keep
  working. `onMissingComposition` now also receives a human-readable reason.
- New render-only pre-flight (`assertSubCompositionsUsable` in
  packages/producer/src/services/htmlCompiler.ts) walks every
  data-composition-src reference (including nested ones, root-relative,
  matching parseSubCompositions' own resolution) before any compilation
  work starts, and throws naming every offending file at once. This is
  unconditional — not gated behind --strict — because a render that
  silently drops a scene is strictly worse than one that refuses to start.
  Confirmed locally: render now fails in ~0.4s with an actionable message
  instead of "succeeding" after 93s with a missing scene.
- New `hyperframes lint` rule `missing_or_empty_sub_composition`
  (packages/cli/src/utils/lintProject.ts) surfaces the same check as a
  file-scoped, actionable lint error (already unconditional — lint exits 1
  on any error).
- `hyperframes validate` now also runs this check before launching a
  browser, so it no longer reports "No console errors" for a project with a
  broken sub-composition.
- `packages/core/src/parsers/htmlParser.ts`: guarded every
  `documentElement`-may-be-null access (parseHtml, updateElementInHtml,
  addElementToHtml, removeElementFromHtml, extractCompositionMetadata,
  validateCompositionHtml) with a new typed `CompositionHtmlParseError` (or,
  for validateCompositionHtml's collect-and-report contract, a typed
  validation failure) instead of a raw crash.

Tests: empty file, whitespace-only, malformed/non-HTML, missing file, nested
sub-compositions (both happy path and broken-grandchild), and the happy path
— at the shared-helper, lint, and render pre-flight layers.

Not changed: the AI-agent authoring skills (skills/*). general-video and
hand-authored flows have no assemble-index.mjs equivalent to guard, so the
fix is at the CLI/render layer instead — flow-agnostic, covers every
authoring path, and the skills' existing "run lint/validate and stop on
failure" guidance now actually catches this class of mistake once run.

Not run in this environment: the producer package's full regression-harness
test suite (`bun test` in packages/producer) — it performs heavy real
rendering (S3 asset downloads, Google Fonts fetches, full video encodes) and
did not complete in a reasonable time in this sandbox. Verified instead via
the targeted test file for all touched code (76/76 passing), whole-repo
typecheck/build/oxlint, `fallow audit` (complexity/duplication/dead-code
gate, clean), and manual end-to-end CLI runs (render/lint/validate) against
reproduction projects, including a nested sub-composition scenario. CI
should run the full producer suite before merge.

Rebased onto main, which extracted @hyperframes/lint from core (lint depends
only on parsers, not core). Relocate checkSubCompositionUsability from core to
@hyperframes/parsers so both core (inliner) and lint can consume it without a
core<->lint cycle; core keeps a @deprecated re-export shim.

Correctness fixes from code review:
- checkSubCompositionUsability now returns "no-composition-root" when the
  <template>/<body> content has no [data-composition-id] element (previously
  a marker-free placeholder body passed both guards).
- lint's missing/empty sub-composition rule now only checks files reachable
  via data-composition-src from the root (matching render pre-flight), instead
  of a raw filesystem walk that false-positived on orphaned files.
- drop `as string` cast in inlineSubCompositions in favor of an explicit
  null guard (per CLAUDE.md).

Review-comment items:
- move EmptyCompositionError JSDoc above the class (was above the adapter fn).
- correct stale circular-ref comment to match actual silent-skip behavior.
- rewrite self-contradicting lint message ("silently drop") to describe the
  new loud render-pre-flight abort.
- add the __PLACEHOLDER__ (/^__[A-Z_]+__$/) skip to the render pre-flight so
  it agrees with lint.

* fix(core): root-cause the id-less media wash in getAttr, drop the band-aid

The blank-wash/dropped-audio fix in #1790 added assignMissingMediaIds in the
producer to stamp ids onto id-less timed media. That was a band-aid: the real
cause is timingCompiler's getAttr, whose regex had no name boundary at all, so
getAttr(tag, "id") matched the trailing id="…" inside data-hf-id="…". compileTag
saw a phantom id and skipped its existing hf-video-N/hf-audio-N injection,
leaving the element with no real el.id — which the render pipeline keys off of.

Fix getAttr with the same (?<![\w-]) lookbehind used for the lint readAttr fix.
compileTag's auto-id injection now fires for data-hf-id-only media, in both the
main composition and sub-compositions (parseSubCompositions runs the same
compileTimingAttrs pass), so assignMissingMediaIds is removed entirely.

Extends the regression fixture with a standalone id-less <audio> (the dropped-
audio side, previously untested) and raises minAudioCorrelation to 0.9. Adds a
timingCompiler test for the data-hf-id/id boundary.

* test(producer): use seeded pink noise (not a pure sine) for fixture audio

A continuous sine anti-aligns under the audio cross-correlation (correlation
-1.0 from a sub-period offset). Broadband seeded noise correlates robustly.

* test: cover audio-side id injection via unit test; keep render fixture video-only

The audio render-baseline used synthetic sine/noise, which anti-aligns under
the harness audio cross-correlation (deterministic -1.0). Real audio fixtures
are unaffected. Cover the audio side of the boundary fix with a deterministic
timingCompiler unit test (id-less <audio> gets hf-audio-N) instead, and keep
the render fixture video-only.

* test(producer): regenerate baseline under the root fix (hf-video-N from compileTag)

Miguel Ángel 6aaab32ccb refactor: make @hyperframes/lint depend only on parsers (#1773)
* refactor: make @hyperframes/lint depend only on parsers, not core

Relocates the leaf utilities lint pulled from core — URL/asset-path helpers,
font aliases, and the slideshow manifest parser — into the standalone
@hyperframes/parsers base, and drops @hyperframes/core from lint's
dependencies. Core keeps back-compat re-export stubs at the old paths, so
producer/studio/cli are unchanged.

Why: lint was the lightweight validator from #1749, but depending on core
transitively pulled studio-server (hono) and bpm-detective — irrelevant to
linting. Now installing @hyperframes/lint pulls only parsers + postcss, and
the core<->lint dependency cycle is gone.

- parsers main entry stays browser-safe (pure utils only); the node:path
  asset helpers live behind the new @hyperframes/parsers/asset-paths subpath
- slideshow parser exposed via @hyperframes/parsers/slideshow

* feat(lint): add browser entry; harden CSS url() regex (ReDoS)

@hyperframes/lint/browser — a fully client-side rule engine (lintHyperframeHtml,
lintMediaUrls, shouldBlockRender) with zero node: builtins, so browser-only
editors can validate compositions with no Node.js and no server round-trip.
Closes the browser-validation ask on #1749.

- shouldBlockRender extracted from the fs-bound project.ts into its own pure
  module so the browser entry stays node-free
- pure composition primitives (data types, font aliases, URL helper) exposed via
  a new recast-free @hyperframes/parsers/composition subpath, so the browser
  bundle tree-shakes out the GSAP/recast machinery (verified: esbuild
  platform=browser bundles with 0 node builtins)
- lint built with a platform:browser tsup pass — compile-time guarantee the
  browser entry never pulls a node builtin
- harden CSS_URL_RE against polynomial ReDoS (CodeQL js/polynomial-redos);
  behavior-preserving, verified against existing tests + an old/new parity check
- parsers/lint marked sideEffects:false

* refactor: extract @hyperframes/lint package from core

Moves all lint rules, hyperframeLinter, lintProject, and related types
from packages/core/src/lint/ into a new standalone packages/lint package.

Core keeps a thin re-export stub at @hyperframes/core/lint for backward
compatibility. Consumer imports (cli lint command, producer hyperframeLint)
are updated to import from @hyperframes/lint directly.

Depends on @hyperframes/parsers (PR #1755).

* fix: restore postcss-selector-parser in core (sourceMutation.ts still uses it)

* fix(ci): add parsers+lint to Dockerfile and build before preview tests

* chore: update bun.lock after restoring postcss-selector-parser dep

* test(cli): update lintProject test for string-dir signature from @hyperframes/lint

* refactor(core): single-source the lint engine in @hyperframes/lint

Delete core's byte-identical copy of the lint rule engine and re-point
staticGuard at @hyperframes/lint, so the render-time render-gate and the
studio preview share one rule engine instead of two copies that could
silently diverge. Back-compat preserved via the @hyperframes/core/lint stub.

Addresses review feedback on the dual-copy footgun.

Miguel Ángel 92385711dc fix(engine): hold last frame when a clip's media is shorter than its slot (#1726)
Renders showed the page background (a one-frame black flash) right before a cut
when a video clip's source media was a hair shorter than its data-duration slot
— the common case, since `ffmpeg -t 1.45` emits 43 frames = 1.433s at 30fps.
The frame lookup only held the last frame at the exact clip end, so the
sub-frame remainder rendered blank.

- Hold the last extracted frame for the rest of the slot once the source is
  exhausted, within a tolerance floored at the compiler's 0.05s clamp epsilon so
  the seam is covered at any fps (2 frames alone is < 0.05s above 40fps). Clips
  deliberately much shorter than their slot still blank for the tail (unchanged).
- Warn when the compiler clamps a video's data-duration down to its media length
  (slot longer than source by more than the clamp epsilon): a render-time
  `[compile]` warning in the producer, plus a matching `validate` warning that

data-start value would produce a malformed selector that throws.

Node-side (core compiler/parser): uses the shared cssAttrSelector.
Browser-side (runtime, studio): uses native CSS.escape().

Supersedes #1568 which fixed only the 3 bundler sites.

setVariableValue pattern.

Also fixes a pre-existing apply-patches.ts gap: the timing/duration patch case was
absent, causing undo of duration changes to silently no-op. Added the duration
branch so inverse patches restore data-duration correctly.

C2: packages/core/src/compiler/timingResolver.ts — shared pure resolveTimings()
consumed by BOTH preview (sdk session) and render (timingCompiler) paths. Word-
anchored elements get enterAt = wordTimings[k].start + offset; elastic hold =
max(0, slotEnd − (enterAt + enterDuration + exitDuration)), clamped ≥ 0; never
timescales animated content. Un-anchored elements keep authored timing (align-on-
adjust). Deterministic + pure: no Date.now, no Math.random, no DOM.

extractGsapLabels() added to gsapParserAcorn.ts to parse tl.addLabel() calls for
the getElementTimings labels field.

Tests: timingResolver.test.ts (10 pure-function tests including preview==render
parity golden test); session.timings.test.ts (15 session-layer tests covering

Replaces the original `window.__hyperframesReady` authored API with an internal adapter contract: `RuntimeDeterministicAdapter.getReadyPromise?: () => PromiseLike | null`. The Three.js adapter implements it by hooking `THREE.DefaultLoadingManager.onStart/onLoad`; the runtime collects promises from every adapter and gates `window.__renderReady = true` on them. Zero authoring burden — composition authors write plain Three.js, framework handles async asset gating automatically.

Also keeps the orthogonal `htmlDocument.ts` script-stripping refactor (substring → regex for simple flag assignments), which fixes the bug where authored scripts referencing readiness flags were stripped despite never assigning them.

Stamped by Magi and Miguel; CI green; tests 33/33 pass.

Structural follow-up to the symlink-escape fix. The recurring miss (#465
fixed isSafePath but left render.ts; the sweep then turned up play.ts,
htmlBundler, ...) is because containment was enforced by convention —
"remember to call isSafePath after every resolve()" — which a new call site
can silently skip.

Add resolveWithinProject(base, relativePath) -> string | null (resolve +
containment in one call) and route the studio-api + bundler sites through
it, so a caller cannot resolve a project-relative path without the guard:

- studio-api routes/files.ts (read, rename, duplicate, upload-dir), preview.ts
  (sub-comp + static asset), render.ts (composition) — all the
  resolve()+isSafePath() pairs collapse to a single call.
- compiler/htmlBundler.ts: its local safePath helper was exactly this; drop
  it for the shared one.

Left intentionally on isSafePath: files.ts upload (resolves a name against a
validated sub-dir but contains against the project root) and htmlBundler's
CSS @import (resolves against the CSS file's dir, contains against the root) —
these resolve and contain against *different* bases, which the single-base
chokepoint doesn't model.

Exported from @hyperframes/core and re-exported from studio-api/helpers for
back-compat. Adds resolveWithinProject unit tests; all existing studio-api
route tests pass unchanged (behavior is identical — same resolve, same
containment, same reject paths).

Canonicalize both base and target with realpathSync before comparing.
The target may not exist yet (new-file writes), so canonicalize the
deepest existing ancestor and re-attach the trailing not-yet-existing
segments, which cannot be symlinks at check time. Fail closed if base is
unresolvable.

Adds safePath.test.ts covering: in-base allow, not-yet-existing write
target, `..` escape, existing-file-through-symlink escape, write-target
under a symlinked parent, file-symlink escape, in-base symlink allow,
symlinked-base canonicalization, and base-missing fail-closed.

- cli commands/play.ts: the `/composition/*` server route used
  `filePath.startsWith(project.dir)` with no trailing-separator guard, so
  both a sibling dir sharing the prefix (`<dir>-evil`) and symlink escapes
  passed. Now uses isSafePath() via @hyperframes/core/studio-api (the same
  lazy-import pattern commands/validate.ts already uses).

Tests: render.test.ts gains a "composition path safety" block (in-base
allow, `..` reject, in-project-symlink-to-outside reject, in-project
symlink staying inside allow). The shared render test adapter now points
at a real dir since isSafePath fails closed on an unresolvable base
(production project dirs always exist on disk).

Not in this change: compiler/htmlBundler.ts has the same class at two
sites (safePath helper + inline CSS @import check), but the compiler sits
below studio-api in the dependency graph and can't import isSafePath
without a backwards edge; that fix needs the helper promoted to a neutral
module and is tracked as a follow-up. renderArgs.ts / videoFrameExtractor.ts
carry the trailing-sep guard and a local-CLI/engine-internal threat model.

relative()-based isPathInside family (core/compiler/assetPaths,
producer/services/fileServer, producer/utils/paths and their callers in
the render pipeline) is symlink-blind in the same way, and engine
videoFrameExtractor's asset resolver needs a caller-side gate (its http
downloads land outside the project root, so a single-root check is wrong).
Both are regression-sensitive render-pipeline surfaces that warrant their
own focused, well-tested pass. renderArgs.ts is intentionally left: it is
filesystem-free by design (injected stat) and its threat model is the
user's own --composition CLI arg.

Miguel Ángel 8802c3fdf8 fix(core): actionable error for empty sub-composition HTML in compile (#1364)
## Problem

The most common render failure in recent reports is:

```
Cannot destructure property 'firstElementChild' of 'documentElement' as it is null.
```

It appears when a `data-composition-src` file resolves to empty or unparsable HTML, and started showing up after the render pipeline change in 0.6.73.

## Root cause

When a sub-composition file is empty or unparsable, linkedom's `parseHTML` returns a document with a null `documentElement`, and the shared inliner (`packages/core/src/compiler/inlineSubCompositions.ts`) dereferences `.body`/`.head` on it, crashing inside linkedom internals with the cryptic destructure error instead of telling the user what's wrong.

## Fix

Guard the resolved sub-composition HTML and the extracted content HTML in the shared inliner: empty or unparsable input now fails with an actionable error naming the offending file.

## Testing

- New tests in core and producer reproducing the empty sub-composition case (previously crashed with the destructure error, now throws the actionable message).
- `bun run build` green, all tests pass in the changed test files.

Miguel Ángel a4706da513 fix(cli): localize external assets in publish archive (#1160)
Compositions referencing assets outside the project directory (via ../
paths) produced broken published projects — those files were never
included in the ZIP archive.

localizeExternalAssets() now scans all HTML and CSS files in the archive
for src, href, and url() references that resolve outside the project
dir. For each, it copies the file into the archive under _ext/ and
rewrites the reference to point there.

Handles: src/href attributes, <style> url(), inline style url(),
standalone CSS url(), sub-composition HTML files, deduplication of
the same asset referenced from multiple files.

Shared primitives (CSS_URL_RE, isNonRelativeUrl, isPathInside) extracted
into core/compiler/assetPaths.ts — single source of truth across core,
producer, and CLI.

Add a GSAP animation editor to the studio Design panel: select an element,
view and edit its tweens (properties, easing, timing), add/delete animations,
and drag custom bezier speed curves — all persisted back to the composition
HTML. Gated behind VITE_STUDIO_ENABLE_GSAP_PANEL.

Parsing of existing GSAP source now uses a recast + Babel AST parser instead of
regex, giving scope resolution, stable tween IDs, and round-trip preservation of
extras and unresolved raw values.

recast compiles to CommonJS that calls require("fs"), which breaks browser and
Vite SSR bundles. To contain it, @hyperframes/core is split into an isomorphic
layer and a Node-only AST layer:

- gsapSerialize.ts holds the recast-free helpers (serialization, keyframe
  conversion, validation, shared types). htmlParser.ts is now fully isomorphic.
- parseGsapScript and the script-mutation helpers live in gsapParser.ts,
  reachable only via the @hyperframes/core/gsap-parser subpath, loaded
  server-side by the studio-api mutation routes and the linter via dynamic
  import (recast stays external under SSR).
- The barrel and the gsap-constants subpath are recast-free, so studio browser
  bundles never trace recast.

Adds AST parser unit + stress coverage and e2e helpers for the panel.

* fix(lint): await async lintHyperframeHtml in all callers

lintHyperframeHtml became async (gsap rules use dynamic import)
but lintProject and check-hyperframe-static weren't awaiting it,
causing typecheck failures and runtime crashes in CI.

Also wire LintRule type in gsap rules to fix fallow unused-type
finding, and suppress render.ts exported-for-tests symbols.

The Function constructor (3bb0d1ef) was a security hardening to prevent
</script> injection, but it broke sub-composition DOM proxy scoping.
This restores the inline IIFE (preserving closure scope) while adding
</script> → <\/script> escaping to maintain the injection prevention.

Updates tests to match the new IIFE output shape.

The Function constructor (3bb0d1ef) breaks sub-composition scripts that
call document.getElementById() — the constructor creates functions with
global scope, losing access to the composition-scoped DOM proxy. Native
method calls on proxy-returned elements throw "Illegal invocation".

Reverts to the inline IIFE that preserves the closure over __hfScoped*
variables. The original motivation (handling </script> in source) is
already handled by the compiler's script bundling path.

The prepareFlattenedInnerRoot function creates a wrapper div when
inlining sub-compositions. This wrapper had no width/height, which
broke CSS height:100% chains — any sub-composition using percentage
heights with flexbox centering would collapse to 0px and render
content at the top instead of centered.

Read data-width/data-height from the inner root and set matching
pixel dimensions on the wrapper's inline style. Applied in both the
compiler (server-side bundling) and the runtime (browser-side
composition loader).

Lirian SuandClaude Opus 4.7 69b7965446 fix(core): preserve replace-pattern characters in bundled runtime IIFE
`injectInterceptor` used `String.prototype.replace(target, replacement)`
to inject the runtime `<script>` before `</head>`. The replacement
string is a substitution template — `$&` expands to the matched
substring, and the minified runtime IIFE contains legitimate `$&`
sequences (e.g. `if(te&&$&!y.hasAttribute(...))`), so every `$&` in
the body was silently rewritten to `</head>`, producing
`Unexpected token '<'` SyntaxErrors and breaking every timeline in
the bundle.

Switch to the function-replacer form so the runtime body is passed
through verbatim. Add a regression test that diffs the bundled
runtime body against `getHyperframeRuntimeScript()` and asserts only
one `</head>` survives in the document — the test exercises the
`<head>`-present injection path (the only branch that uses the
substitution template; the no-`<head>` fallback uses slice+concat
and was unaffected).

Only the bundler is affected — `producer/fileServer.ts` already uses
the function form via `injectScriptsIntoHtml` in
`htmlDocument.ts`, so render output was correct. Snapshot, preview,
studio, layout, and validate all consume `bundleToSingleHtml` and
were broken before this fix.

Miguel Ángel 45999226a3 fix(studio): server-side DOM patching, render CSS scoping, and resilience
Root-cause fix for edits being wiped after refresh: the studio's
inspector edits were patched client-side via regex matching in
sourcePatcher.ts, which silently failed for many compositions ("Unable
to patch" toast). Replaced with a server-side patch-element API endpoint
using linkedom for proper DOM parsing via querySelector.

Also fixes the WYSIWYG render bug where sub-composition CSS was not
applied. The CSS scoping generated descendant selectors when both
attributes coexist on the same host element. Fixed to use compound
selectors for the authored root.

Edit persistence:
- New POST /file-mutations/patch-element endpoint using linkedom
- persistDomEditOperations calls server instead of client regex
- 15 tests covering all patch operation types

Render CSS scoping:
- Compound selector for authored root on host element
- Regression test: wysiwyg-subcomp-css (baseline pending Docker)
- 3 unit tests + 1 integration test

GSAP CDN fallback:
- Preview: error-handler catches gsap 404 and loads from CDN
- Producer: rewrites missing local gsap paths to CDN before compile

Studio resilience:
- Error boundary with recoverable UI
- Lazy mediabunny import prevents crash cascade
- Hash routing listens for hashchange events
- Sub-composition duration reads data-hf-authored-duration fallback
- Save debounce 600ms to requestAnimationFrame

Observability:
- PostHog telemetry for crashes, save failures, tab switches, playback,
  toolbar actions, navigation, and render starts

Miguel Ángel 3e17ef7447 fix: propagate data-timeline-locked in compiler inliners
The runtime path (compositionLoader.ts) already propagated
data-timeline-locked from inner root to host, but both compiler
inliners (bundler + producer) did not. Bundled output re-opened in
Studio would lose the lock. Now propagated in inlineSubCompositions
alongside the existing data-hf-authored-id propagation.

Miguel Ángel 9c159ad96d fix: escape href in compiler link dedup + add font-link extraction tests
Escape href values in querySelector calls for link dedup in both
htmlBundler.ts and htmlCompiler.ts to match the runtime path (which
uses CSS.escape). Prevents SyntaxError on hrefs containing quotes.

Add two tests for inlineSubCompositions font-link extraction:
- Verifies <link> elements are extracted with original rel + crossorigin
- Verifies dedup across multiple sub-compositions sharing the same font

Miguel Ángel 5d501a1628 fix: preserve original rel attribute on sub-composition link extraction
Store {href, rel, crossorigin} from source <link> elements instead of
re-deriving rel from a URL substring heuristic. Fixes preview-vs-render
parity: a stylesheet link whose href lacks ".css" or "css2?" was
emitted as preconnect in the compiled output, silently dropping the font.

Also documents that caption components ship with transparent backgrounds
intentionally — users add contrast layers in the host composition.

Miguel Ángel 471b4efb4b feat: data-timeline-locked + fix font loss in sub-compositions
Timeline locking:
- Add data-timeline-locked attribute support — fully disables move,
  trim-start, and trim-end in Studio for clips that carry this attr
- Runtime propagates the attribute from inner composition root to host
  element so component authors control it from their HTML
- All 15 caption components in the registry now carry the attribute

Font fix:
- Extract <link rel="stylesheet"> and <link rel="preconnect"> from
  sub-composition <head> alongside existing <style>/<script> extraction
- Fixes caption components (and any sub-comp using Google Fonts via
  <link> tags) losing their font-family when loaded as sub-compositions
- Applied in both runtime (compositionLoader) and compiler
  (inlineSubCompositions) paths

Miguel Ángel 6652fae243 fix(#969): producer path propagates data-hf-authored-id to host element
When the producer inlines a sub-composition with compId match, it takes
innerRoot.innerHTML which strips the wrapper div and its id attribute.
CSS/GSAP selectors rewritten from #ID to [data-hf-authored-id=ID] then
match nothing.

Fix: after innerHTML injection, copy the inner root's id as
data-hf-authored-id on the host element. This makes #ID selectors work
identically in both preview (bundler) and render (producer) paths.
